The SSHI Legacy Book

The following recordings of Hilbre Island have been gathered during the duration of the research project. These impressions have been created by the general public, by locals and non-locals to the area of Hilbre (West Kirby/Hoylake). Contributors range from a variety of backgrounds, with and without experience on creating art. The aim of inviting everyone to contribute, regardless of artistic background/experience meant that the experience of acknowledging the landscape is an inclusive endeavour, boundary-free, unrestricted.

About the SSHI Book
The book is divided into 4 sections, the 1st section compiles recordings from the workshop Impressions (Being Human Festival - November 2024), the 2nd compiles recordings from the Re-Imagining Hilbre workshops (April 2025), 3rd section are recordings made off the island during a workshop at LJMU (Liverpool John Moores University) some of these were made by people who never visited the island but who listened to an introduction and sounds of the island during the workshops. The 4th section compiles recordings made during the exhibition ‘Re-Imagining Hilbre’ (June-July 2025).

1st section: ‘Impressions’ from workshop at
Being Human Festival 2024

These are outcomes produced by 15 attendees to the workshop Impressions which I ran at the event ‘The Ecologies of Hilbre Island - A Creative Expedition’ (Being Human Festival 2024); I assembled these on the page for photographing; some impressions are not here but they are included in the legacy artwork named ‘Impressions’ (2024) which can be viewed here (bottom of the page).

2nd section: ‘Re-Imagining Hilbre’ workshops

Read more about these workshops here

3rd section: workshop with colleagues at LJMU (Liverpool John Moores University)

Three of these impressions/collages of the island were made by people who never visited Hilbre Island before.

4th section: contributions during the exhibition
Re-Imagining Hilbre

All of the following impressions were gathered during the duration of the exhibition
Re-Imagining Hilbre (17.06.25 - 01.07.25). Some visitors took the art materials outside to record the island whilst others did it indoors after looking at the work on the
exhibition.
